2007 Internships at IBM Research/Cambridge
IBM Research in Cambridge, MA, USA, is seeking smart, energetic
students (grad and undergrad) for internships in 2007. Our lab builds
and studies new forms of "social software," technology that helps
people collaborate and share knowledge. Past intern projects have
focused on topics such as data visualization, wikis, blogs, social
networks, and collaborative software development; many have resulted
in academic publications, patents, and new features in IBM products.
Interns must be top students with experience in one of the following
areas: computer science, interaction design, psychology, sociology, or
mathematics. Familiarity with human-computer interaction,
visualization, user-studies, and computer-supported cooperative work
is a plus.

Project Description: Social Software Analytics
We are analyzing how people use tagging-based services within an
enterprise. We have access to large databases of tagged bookmarks and,
in many cases, logs of searches carried out in those databases. We are
developing tools to help understand what is in those databases, and
how the tag-based resources can provide value to an organization.
We are looking for interns with skills in quantitative analysis,
including both statistical packages (e.g., SPSS, UCINET) and
hand-coding of tools to solve specific problems (especially in the
area of lexical analysis).

Project Description: Qualitative Observation & Analysis in Social
Software Usage
We are studying how people integrate social software services into
their work. We have access to large groups of employees who use one or
more of these services. In this project, we will observe and interview
employees for an ethnographically-informed view of how and why they
use these services. Some work will be done face-to-face, but some work
will involve telephone interviews and/or email or server-based
questionnaires. We will also be searching for instances of adaptation
or reinvention, as employees create new functionalities or new service
types through unanticipated usages.
We are looking for interns with skills in ethnography, qualitative
analysis, and participatory analysis. Experience with remote
ethnographic/qualitative work (e.g., by telephone or internet) is
highly desirable. Knowledge of the concepts of grounded theory or
activity theory would be a plus, but not a requirement.
